Well-organized closet shelving makes it easy to find and use your belongings. Preparing a custom design will help meet your storage needs. Whether it’s a master bedroom closet or a simple office closet, the design of shelving cabinets helps eliminate the question of where to store things.

Measure the cabinet horizontally and vertically. Make an outline of the scale cabinet on graph paper. Include any hanging rack shelves or the closest one you already have. Take note of any type of lighting or electrical characteristics. Make a list of items that will be stored in this closet. Include shoes, clothes, storage boxes, jewelry boxes and other clothing and accessories for bedroom cabinets. You may want to include linen storage in this closet space, too. For offices, pantries and handicraft cabinets, make a list of items. Measure long objects that need a specific amount of storage space.

Fill the shelving needs for the wardrobe, from one corner of your scheme and your way of working around the closet clockwise. Garments and folded footwear require a shelf at least 12 inches deep. Determine the type of material you want to use shelves. Most closet systems use types of wire shelving, laminated MDF or solid wood sheets.
